The Mushroom Farm Story

Pink Oyster

Nothing quite describes the opportunity before me to realize a dream held by my father and his father.  Today, I’m proud to have a role in bringing their vision of a family farm to fruition.  Shady Knoll Mushroom Farm LLC, surrounded by the rolling hills of the Northern Shenandoah Valley is much more than a family farm, it’s a bountiful resource to contribute farm fresh products to the community.

A little background, years ago while in San Diego, California I signed up for a farm tour put on by the local Farm Bureau.  Throughout the day the group toured about 15 different farms, everything from a flower farm to hillside orchards filled with avocados.  All of the farms were interesting, but the mushroom meadow was amazing.

From the moment I stepped foot on the farm I was fascinated with growing mushrooms.  I still remember to this day the taste of a fresh mushroom that had just been harvested.  It was like no mushroom I had ever tasted before, flavorful and enticingly earthy.  Ever since that tour years ago I knew, when the time came, it was mushrooms that I would grow.  Where do I start?

In 2016, with no better reason than, no time like the present, I jumped in with both feet determined to breathe life into this collective dream of a family farm.

Today Shady Knoll Mushroom Farm,LLC is home to several varieties of gourmet mushrooms grown and harvested for local restaurants.  Spring of 2017 we’ll bring our farm fresh mushrooms to farmers markets in the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

If you like mushrooms, I encourage you to try the mushrooms we grow at Shady Knoll Mushroom Farm, LLC.
